Name:
Platanus wyomingensis (Sycamore)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Fruiting body is 0.6 inches across
This is a wonderful example of a fruiting body from Platanus wyomingensis, a sycamore. This specimen is from the Eocene of Utah. This "sycamore ball" exhibits great detail - the "spike-like" seeds are easily seen. A portion of the stem of the fruiting body is still tightly attached. The dark colored fossil contrasts nicely with the grayish-tan matrix. It is well positioned on the semi-rectangular plate of shale. This is a great specimen of a sycamore fruiting body from the Green River Formation.
