Name:
Lepidodendron aculeatum
Age: Pennsylvanian
Formation: Cherokee Series
Location: Pella, Iowa
Size: Plate is approximately 6.8" X 11.2"
Here is a very large specimen of Lepidodendron bark from the Pennsylvanian of Iowa. Lepidodendron trees were very important in the formation of coal in the mid-continent area. The diamond-shaped pattern of the bark is very distinct. Each "diamond" represents the point of attachment of a fallen leaf. The fossil has very nice color and contrast. The reverse side of the sandstone slab shows many partial, linear, Lepidodendron leaves. This is a very displayable example of Lepidodendron bark from the Coal Age deposits of Iowa.
