Name:
Sigillaria sp.
Age: Pennsylvanian
Formation: Westfalian
Location: Piesberg, Germany
Size: Plate is 2.7" X 4.0"
Here is an uncommon piece of bark from an unusual location. This is Sigillaria sp. from the Carboniferous of Germany. This Coal Age tree resembled the modern-day palm tree. It attained heights in excess of 100 feet and seldom, if ever, bore branches. A cluster of long, grass-like leaves was at the top of the tree. After the leaves had dropped, a series of leaf scars became visible on the bark. The scars occur in vertical rows and each row is separated by a furrow extending the full length of the trunk. This specimen exhibits great detail - the leaf scars are very easily seen. This is an excellent example of bark from this unusual tree.
