Name:
Araucaria mirabilis
Age: Jurassic
Formation: "Petrified Forest"
Location: Cerro Cuadrado, Patagonia, Argentina
Size: Cone is 2.5 inches long
Here is a beautiful Araucaria mirabilis cone from the Jurassic of Patagonia. Araucaria is closely related to the modern-day monkey-puzzle tree. The cone has been cut in half and both halves have been highly polished. It has been totally replaced by silica in a multitude of wonderful colors. The exterior of the cone displays excellent detail - the scale pattern is clearly defined and a portion of the stem is still visible. The interior of the cone is just exquisite - the individual seeds are very distinct. This is a gorgeous fossil cone from the Araucaria tree of South America.
