This is a large specimen of Lepidodendron bark from the Pennsylvanian of Iowa. Lepidodendron trees were very important in the formation of coal in the mid-continent area. The diamond-shaped pattern of the bark is very distinct. Each "diamond" represents the point of attachment of a fallen leaf. This specimen is one of the most detailed examples of Lepidodendron bark that we have ever seen. The fossil has very nice color and contrasts well with the lighter-colored sandstone matrix. This is a very displayable slab of Lepidodendron bark from the Coal Age.
