Name:
Osmanthus praemissa
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Leaf is a little over 2 inches long
Here is a very pretty specimen of an uncommon leaf. This is Osmanthus praemissa from the Green River Formation of Utah. This type of leaf has very unique margins - they are broadly crenate or "notched". These unusual margins are beautifully displayed on this specimen. This lance-shaped leaf has strong primary venation and weak, alternate, secondary venation. The very tip of the leaf is intact and the short petiole is still attached. The brown fossil contrasts nicely with the khaki-colored matrix. It is almost perfectly centered on the natural block of shale. This is a great specimen of this rare leaf from the Eocene.
