Name:
Sequoia sp.
Age: Oligocene
Formation: Muddy Creek Formation
Location: Beaverhead County, Montana
Size: Individual cones are 0.25" across.
Here is a very fine specimen of two Sequoia cones from the Oligocene of Montana. Isn't it strange that such a large tree would have relatively small cones? These fossil cones are still attached to the stalk and exhibit fine detail. The ovoid cones display spirally arranged, peltate scales. The fossils have great color and contrast and are nicely positioned on the natural plate of matrix. This is an excellent example of fossil Sequoia cones. There is also a beautiful sprig of Metasequoia on the back side of the slab.
