Name:
Lepidodendron sp.
Age: Pennsylvanian
Formation: Cherokee Series
Location: Pella, Iowa
Size: Branch is almost 5 inches long
Here is a very nice specimen of a Lepidodendron branch from the Pennsylvanian of Iowa. Lepidodendron trees were very important in the formation of coal in the mid-continent area. The distinctive diamond-shaped pattern of the bark is clearly defined. Each "diamond" represents the point of attachment of a fallen leaf. The natural, dark brown color of the fossil contrasts nicely with the off-white, fine-grained sandstone matrix. It is well centered on the rounded, rectangular plate. This is a fine example of Lepidodendron from Iowa.
