Name:
Ginkgoites cf. hermelini
Age: Eocene
Formation: Tranquille Shale
Location: Cache Creek, British Columbia, Canada
Size: Leaf is 2.8" long including petiole
Here is a spectacular example of a very uncommon leaf. This is Ginkgoites cf. hermelini from the Eocene of Canada. Ginkgoites is much like a true Ginkgo except that it is very dissected. This large leaf is unusually complete (all of the rounded lobes are wonderfully intact) and exquisitely detailed. The palmate venation is well displayed and the long petiole is still attached. The dark brown leaf contrasts nicely with the tan matrix. It is well positioned on the large natural plate of shale that also contains another partial specimen of a deciduous leaf. This is one of the finest examples of Ginkgoites that we have ever seen.
