Name:
Huge Fossil Fern Plate
Age: Pennsylvanian
Formation: Llewellyn Formation
Location: Near St. Clair, Pennsylvania
Size: Plate is almost 19 inches across!
This is a very large plate of plant fossils from the now-closed location at St. Clair, Pennsylvania. This plate was found years ago when the "good layers" were still available - they have since been all dug out. The distinct fossils are preserved as a thin film of white pyrophyllite on black shale. The detail of the fossils is quite nice, and the MANY plants are well showcased on the very large plate of shale (almost 19 inches across!). There are different types of ferns preserved, and many different sized fronds on the plates. This is a very fine display slab of white fossil fern fronds from the Coal Regions of Pennsylvania.
