Location: Johnson County, Missouri
Size: Concretion is 2.5 inches long
Here is a very nice fossil plant from Missouri. This is a large Annularia sp. from the Pennsylvanian. Annularia represent the leaf whorls of the Calamites plant. This fossil plant is wonderfully preserved in a concretion. Both halves of the concretion are present, so both part and counterpart of the fossil are intact. The plant exhibits very fine detail - the sunburst-like whorl of long, linear leaves is clearly defined, and parts of two other whorls are also preserved. The dark brown fossil contrasts beautifully with the orangish matrix. This is an excellent specimen of an Annularia whorl from the Coal Age.
