Here is a very interesting plate of Coal Age plants. This is Sphenophyllum sp. from the Carboniferous Age of Pennsylvania. This unusual fossil plant consisted of a slender stem bearing whorls of wedge-shaped leaves. This plant became extinct at the end of the Pennsylvanian. This displayable branch of Sphenophyllum ''flowers'' exhibits excellent detail and extremely nice, natural white coloration. There are eight distinct whorls of leaves present on this plate, many more whorls than are on a normal branch. The slender stem is easily seen, and the individual, spatulate leaves are clearly defined - what a display! And there are also many white ferns preserved on the back side of the plate. This is a very collectible example of this unique fossil plant.
