Fossil Fern Fronds

Formation: Llewellyn Formation
Location: Coal Valley, Schuylkill Co., PA
Size: Plate is 10.5 inches long
This is a very unusual plant fossil. It is a striking plate of fossil fern fronds from Pennsylvania. This specimen was collected in the 1970's by one collector, who then died with the locality info, and the only lot of this material ever found in his collection. Many collectors have tried to rediscover this locality, but to no avail. The reason this material is coveted by collectors is the color/contrast of the fossils and the completeness of the fronds. At most sites, only frondlets are found - but as you see here, parts of full fronds are preserved. The fronds have great detail and contrast beautifully with the colorful matrix plate. This is a very collectible fern fossil from the lost site at "Coal Valley, Schuylkill Co., PA".
