Fossil Fern Fronds
Age: Pennsylvanian
Formation: Llewellyn Formation
Location: Near St. Clair, Pennsylvania
Size: Plate is 7.1 inches across
This is a very cool plant fossil from the now-closed location near St. Clair, Pennsylvania. The pair of fossil fern fronds are preserved as a thin film of white pyrophyllite on black shale. The detail of this fossil is quite nice, and the fronds are quite distinct and very displayable. And the ferns are even two different types - go figure! This is a very nice example of a fossil fern frond plate from the Coal Regions of Pennsylvania.
