Name:
Ferns and Sphenophyllum
Age: Pennsylvanian
Formation: Llewellyn Formation
Location: Near St. Clair, Pennsylvania
Size: Plate is 17 inches across!
This is a rare plate of very distinct plant fossils. It is a HUGE plate with fern fronds and many Sphenophyllum "flowers" from Pennsylvania. The fossils are replaced with the mineral Pyrophyllite, which gives the fossils their stunning white color. The fern frond is the center is both complete and a rare type, which is extremely unusual in itself. But there are MANY branches of Sphenophyllum "flowers" also preserved on the plate - it is uncommon to find any Sphenophyllum at all, let alone many long branches. The plants have great detail preserved and contrast beautifully with the black matrix plate. The fossils are well showcased on the HUGE (SEVENTEEN inches across!), natural slab of shale. This is a very collectible plate of fossil plants from the Coal Age of Pennsylvania.
