This is a nice, displayable fossil seed fern plate from the famous location near St. Clair, Pennsylvania. There are MANY nice fronds on the plate. The seed ferns are preserved as a thin film of white pyrophyllite on black shale. But the unusual feature of this fossil is there are three different layers preserved - the top fern is on a layer that is partially covering the fern on the next layer down, which is also partially covering a fern on the bottom layer! There are also many ferns preserved on the back side of the plate. This is a very cool grouping of Coal-Age ferns preserved on three different layers.
