EXTINCTIONS Choice

Name:   Sphenophyllum, Seed Pod
Age:  Pennsylvanian
Formation:  Llewellyn Formation
Location:  Near St. Clair, Pennsylvania
Size:  Plate is 7.5 inches tall

Here is a very collectible plate of Coal Age plants. These are Sphenophyllum "flowers" from the Pennsylvanian Age Coal Regions of Pennsylvania. This unusual fossil plant consisted of a slender stem bearing whorls of wedge-shaped leaves. This distinct plant became extinct at the end of the Pennsylvanian. This plate of Sphenophyllum ''flowers'' exhibits excellent detail. There are two main branches and many whorls of leaves present on this plate. The slender stems are easily seen, and the individual, spatulate leaves are clearly defined. But that's not all - there is also a fossilized seed pod preserved on the plate! It is extremely rare to find a nice pod at all, let alone on a plate with Sphenoplyllum. And the striking white coloration is fully natural. This is a very collectible example of these unique plant fossils.
