Fossil Fern Frond
Age: Pennsylvanian
Formation: Llewellyn Formation
Location: Near St. Clair, Pennsylvania
Size: Frond is almost 4 inches long
This is a very nice fossil fern frond from the now-closed location near St. Clair, Pennsylvania. The fossil is preserved as a thin film of white pyrophyllite on black shale. The detail of this fossil is quite nice, and the plant is beautifully displayed on the natural plate of shale. There are also nice fern fronds preserved on the back side of the plate. This is a very cool example of a large, colorful fossil fern frond from the Coal Regions of Pennsylvania.
