Name:
Ginkgo biloba Leaf, Unidentified Leaf
Age: Paleocene
Formation: Sentinnel Butte Formation
Location: Almont, North Dakota
Size: Plate is 6.8 inches tall
This is a very nice example of Ginkgo biloba (formerly G. adiantoides) from the Paleocene of North Dakota. The fossil leaf is very distinct and preserves fine detail. The palmate venation of the Ginkgo leaf is wonderfully displayed. This specimen has a long petiole still attached to the leaf. The off-white color of the leaf contrasts well with the dark brown matrix. The fossil is well showcased on the plate that also contains an unidentified round leaf. This is a very unusual fossil leaf association from the Sentinnel Butte Formation.
