Here is a very interesting plate of Coal Age plants. This is Sphenophyllum sp. from the Pennsylvanian of Pennsylvania. This unusual fossil plant consisted of a slender stem bearing whorls of wedge-shaped leaves. This plant became extinct at the end of the Pennsylvanian. This plate of Sphenophyllum ''flowers'' exhibits excellent detail. There are many whorls of leaves present on this plate. The distinct stems are easily seen, and the individual, spatulate leaves are clearly defined. There is also a nice fern frond preserved on the plate. These fossils have a beautiful, natural white coloration. This is a very nice example of these unique fossil plants.
