EXTINCTIONS Choice

Name:   Fossil Ferns and Sphenophyllum
Age:  Pennsylvanian
Formation:  Llewellyn Formation
Location:  Near St. Clair, Pennsylvania
Size:  Plate is 9.7 inches across

This is a very distinct grouping of plant fossils. It is a striking plate with many fern fronds and Sphenophyllum "flowers" from Pennsylvania. This specimen is replaced with the mineral Pyrophyllite, which gives the fossils their stunning white color. There are FIVE examples of Sphenophyllum on the plate along with two different types of ferns. The plants have great detail preserved and contrast beautifully with the black matrix. The fossils are very well spaced on the large, natural plate of shale. This is a collectible association of fossil plants from the Coal Age of Pennsylvania.
