Name:
Ocotea coloradensis,
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Ocotea leaf is 2.6 inches long
Here is a very rare plant fossil. This is Ocotea coloradensis from the Eocene of Colorado. This is only the third example of this leaf that we have seen. This long leaf has an acute base and exhibits slightly undulating margins. The palmate venation of the leaf is beautifully displayed, and the petiole is still tightly attached. The naturally dark leaf contrasts wonderfully with the khaki-colored matrix. The leaf is well showcased on the natural plate of shale that also contains a rare Quercus cuneatus (Oak) leaf on the back side! This is an excellent example of two extremely scarce leaves on one fossil plate.
