Name:
Populus wilmattae (Poplar Leaf)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Leaf is 3 inches long
This is an extremely detailed fossil leaf. It is a cool leaf of Populus wilmattae, a Poplar, from the Green River Formation of Utah. This heart-shaped leaf has a tight, branching base and a very long acuminate apex. The venation of the leaf is quite distinct and easily seen with the naked eye. A nice section of the petiole is still tightly attached to the base of the leaf. The partially bug-eaten leaf has excellent natural color and contrasts beautifully with the khaki-colored plate of matrix. This is a very detailed specimen of a Poplar leaf from the Eocene.
