This is a classic plant fossil. It is a fossil Fern Frond from the famous Mazon Creek locality of Illinois. This specimen was acquired from an old collection and was found in the 1960's. This fern is preserved in a concretionary matrix, giving it excellent color and detail. The dark coloration is striking, and the minute detail is exquisite. The fern is wonderfully showcased in the center of the nodule. And both halves of the split pair concretion are present. This is a very nice plant fossil from the Mazon Creek flora.
