EXTINCTIONS Choice

Name:   Peacock Coal
Age:  Pennsylvanian
Formation:  Llewellyn Formation
Location:  McAdoo, Pennsylvania
Size:  Piece is 3.6 inches across

This is a cool fossil from Pennsylvania. It is a colorful piece of Peacock Coal from the Coal Mines of Central Pennsylvania. I have been collecting fossils in PA for years, and have not seen coal pieces that are this colorful. It seems that the color comes from a thin mineral coating, resulting from iron oxide(?) being deposited in the cracks and seams of the coal. This fossil is naturally striking - has not been altered or repaired in any way. This is a great example of an extremely colorful fossil from the classic Coal Deposits of Pennsylvania.
