Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Douglas Pass, Colorado
Size: Leaf is 4.2 inches long including petiole
Here is a very nice fossil leaf. This is Macginitiea wyomingensis, a Sycamore, from the Green River Formation of Colorado. All five lobes of the leaf are easily seen, and the serrrated margins are exhibited in wonderful fashion. The venation of the leaf is quite distinct, and a long petiole is still tightly attached to the leaf. The dark brown leaf contrasts beautifully with the khaki-colored matrix. The fossil is well showcased on the squared plate of shale. And there are also many insects preserved near the petiole of the leaf! This is a collectible example of a large Sycamore leaf and insects from Colorado.
