Name:
Sycamore and Maple Leaves
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Plate is 9.7 inches across
Here is a very unusual plate of fossil leaves from the Green River Formation of Utah. There are two very similar leaves on the plate. The larger leaf on the plate is Macginitiea wyomingensis, a Sycamore Leaf. This leaf has all five lobes preserved, with this tip of one being bug-eaten. This distinct leaf still has the long petiole attached and exhibits fine detail. The leaf on the right of the plate is an extremely bug-eaten Acer lesquereuxi (Maple Leaf). The fossils have great color and contrast and are nicely showcased on the very large, squared plate of shale. This is a very collectible plate of fossil leaves from Utah.
