Name:
Macginitiea wyomingensis (Sycamore Leaf)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Douglas Pass, Colorado
Size: Leaf is 5.7 inches long
Here is a very large fossil leaf. This is Macginitiea wyomingensis, a Sycamore, from the Green River Formation of Colorado. All five lobes of the leaf are easily seen, and the serrrated margins are exhibited in wonderful fashion. The venation of the leaf is quite distinct, and a long petiole is still tightly attached to the leaf. The brown leaf contrasts beautifully with the khaki-colored matrix. The large fossil (almost six inches long!) is well showcased on the large plate of shale that also contains a cluster of mosquitoes preserved near the petiole! This is a very collectible example of a large Sycamore leaf and insects from the Green River Formation.
