Name:
Populus wilmattae (Poplar Leaf)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Leaf is 4.3 inches long
This is an extremely unusual fossil leaf. It is a large leaf of Populus wilmattae, a Poplar, from the Green River Formation of Utah. This heart-shaped leaf has a tight, branching base and a very long acuminate apex. The venation of the leaf is quite nice and well displayed. The LONG petiole is still tightly attached to the base of the leaf. But the unusual feature of this leaf is that it was partially eaten by bugs before it was fossilized! The distinct bug-eaten edges are easily seen with the naked eye. The leaf has excellent natural color and contrasts beautifully with the khaki-colored plate of matrix. This is a very rare specimen of a bug-eaten Poplar leaf from the Eocene.
