Unusual Laurel Leaf from the Green River Formation
Stock Number  FPU323
EXTINCTIONS Choice

Name:   Persea coriacea (Laurel)
Age:  Eocene
Formation:  Green River Formation
Location:  Bonanza, Utah
Size:  Leaf is 3.8 inches including petiole

This is a very uncommon specimen of a fossil leaf from the Green River Shale. This is a large specimen of Persea coriacea, a member of the Laurel family. This lanceolate shaped leaf exhibits good detail. The venation of the leaf is evident, and the tip of the leaf has been bug-eaten, which is quite interesting. A small petiole is attached to the base of the leaf. The fossil has good color and contrast with the khaki-colored matrix. The leaf is well centered on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a rare specimen of a Persea leaf from the Eocene of Utah.
