Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Douglas Pass, Colorado
Size: Leaf is 4.3 inches long
Here is a classic fossil leaf from a classic locailty. This is Macginitiea wyomingensis, a Sycamore, from the Green River Formation of Colorado. All five lobes of the leaf are easily seen, with the tip of one lobe being bug-eaten. The venation of the leaf is quite distinct, and a long petiole is still tightly attached to the leaf. The dark brown leaf contrasts beautifully with the khaki-colored matrix. And, again, this leaf also shows evidence of insect damage, which is quite unusual. This is a very fine bug-eaten example of an extinct Sycamore leaf from Colorado.
