Unusual Maple Leaf with Very Nice Detail
Stock Number  FPU309

Name:   Acer lesquereuxi (Maple)
Age:  Eocene
Formation:  Green River Formation
Location:  Bonanza, Utah
Size:  Leaf is 2.8 inches long

This is a very nice specimen of Acer lesquereuxi, a maple, from the Green River Formation of Utah. Maple leaves are highly uncommon at this site. This leaf should not be confused with the more common Sycamore leaf. All five lobes of the leaf are intact, and the venation is clearly defined. A long petiole is still tightly attached to the leaf. The leaf has very nice, natural color and contrasts wonderfully with the light-colored matrix. The fossil is well centered on the squared plate of shale. This is a fine example of a rare maple leaf from the Eocene.
