Extremely Unusual Branch of Balloon Vine Leaves
Stock Number  FPCOL55
EXTINCTIONS Choice

Name:   Cardiospermum coloradensis (Balloon Vine)
Age:  Eocene
Formation:  Green River Formation
Location:  Douglas Pass, Colorado
Size:  Branch is 3.4 inches long

This is a very fine branch of Cardiospermum coloradensis (Balloon Vine) leaves from the Green River Formation of Colorado. Living members of Cardiospermum are herbaceous, or woody vines. The fossil species appear to represent shrubs rather than vines. A branch of Balloon Vine leaves is a very uncommon find in the fossil record. The large-lobed leaves have great color and contrast and are well showcased on the natural plate of shale. This is a very distinct branch of this strange-looking leaf from the Eocene.
