Name:
Salix cockerelli (Willow), Balloon Vine
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Douglas Pass, Colorado
Size: Plate is almost 6 inches across
Here is a rare plate of fossil leaves from the Eocene of Colorado. There are two different leaves beautifully displayed on this plate. On the left side of the slab is a wonderful specimen of Cardiospermum coloradensis (Balloon Vine). This leaf has great natural color and fine detail preserved. To the right of this leaf is a rare example of a Salix cockerelli (Willow) branch. There are three leaves on the branch, which is extremely unusual. The leaves have excellent detail - the venation is clearly defined. The leaves have great color and contrast and are well positioned on the semi-rectangular plate of shale. This is a very unusual plate of different types of leaves from the Green River Formation.
