EXTINCTIONS Choice

Name:   Equisetum winchesteri
Age:  Eocene
Formation:  Green River Formation
Location:  Bonanza, Utah
Size:  Rush is 8.3 inches long

Here is an unusual plant fossil from the Eocene of Utah. It's a large Equisetum winchesteri rush. The LONG Equisetum (horsetail) rush is very well preserved and exhibits great detail. It is very easy to see that this specimen is directly related to the modern-day Equisetum. This horsetail shows very good detail - the individual joints, or nodes, are nicely displayed. The fossil has outstanding color and contrast and is nicely centered on the rectangular plate of matrix. This is a rare fossil rush from the Green River Formation of Utah.
