Name:
Double Mazon Creek Fern
Age: Pennsylvanian
Formation: Carbondale Formation
Location: Braidwood, Illinois
Size: Concretion is over 5 inches long!
Here is a large fossil fern concretion from the famous Mazon Creek area of Illinois. This specimen was acquired from an old collection near Chicago. There are two 3-D Coal Age plants in this siderite concretion - both halves of the concretion (part and counterpart) are present. This large specimen (over five inches long) exhibits exquisite detail - the individual leaflets are clearly defined, and the venation of the leaflets is easily seen. The natural color and contrast of the fossil is quite striking - no coloring or enhancement has been added to the specimen. This is a very cool Mazon Creek fern double from an old collection - very sought-after by collectors.
