Name:
Rosa hilliae Leaf and Sumac
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Plate is over 6 inches across
Here is a very unusual plate of leaves from the Eocene of Utah. There are two leaves on this slab of Green River Shale. The leaf on the left is Rosa hilliae, the one on the right is a Sumac. These leaves have nice detail and shape preserved. Both of these plant fossils have very nice color and contrast wonderfully with the light-colored matrix. The fossils are well showcased on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a great example of the rare leaf, Rosa hilliae - the only example of this elusive leaf that we have ever seen.
