Distinct Lepidodendron Bark on Both Sides of Rock
Stock Number  FPBARK902
EXTINCTIONS Choice

Name:   Lepidodendron Bark
Age:  Pennsylvanian
Formation:  Cherokee Series
Location:  Pella, Iowa
Size:  Branch is 4 inches long

This is a beautiful specimen of Lepidodendron bark from the Pennsylvanian of Iowa. Lepidodendron trees were very important in the formation of coal in the mid-continent area. The diamond-shaped pattern of the bark is very distinct. Each ''diamond'' represents the point of attachment of a fallen leaf. This specimen is one of the more detailed examples of Lepidodendron bark that we have seen. And there is even a substantial branch preserved on the back side of the plate! This is a great example of this unusual bark from a Coal Age tree.
