Fossil Seed Fern Plate
Age: Pennsylvanian
Formation: Llewellyn Formation
Location: Near St. Clair, Pennsylvania
Size: Plate is about 15 inches long
This is a beautiful plant fossil. It is a striking plate of fossil fern fronds from Pennsylvania. The fossils are replaced with the mineral Pyrophyllite, which gives the ferns their stunning white color. The long fern fronds have great detail and contrast beautifully with the black matrix plate. And there are also Sphenophylum "flowers" preserved, which is extremely unusual. This is a very displayable grouping of fossil fern fronds from the Coal Age.
