EXTINCTIONS Choice

Name:   Populus cinnamomoides Leaf
Age:  Eocene
Formation:  Green River Formation
Location:  Bonanza, Utah
Size:  Leaf is 4.6 inches long including petiole

Here is a very nice fossil leaf. This is a Populus cinnamomoides leaf from the Green River Formation of Utah. The LONG, serrated shape of the leaf are easily seen, and tapered tip of the leaf is exhibited in wonderful fashion. The venation of the leaf is quite distinct, and a long petiole is still tightly attached to the leaf. The dark brown leaf contrasts beautifully with the khaki-colored matrix. The fossil is well showcased on the large, squared plate of shale. This is a great example of this unusual Poplar leaf from the Eocene.
