Name:
Araucaria alvarezi
Age: Jurassic
Formation: Petrified Forest
Location: Near Santa Cruz, Argentina
Size: Cone is 4.2 inches long
Here is a beautiful Araucaria alvarezi cone from the Jurassic of Patagonia. Araucaria is closely related to the modern-day monkey-puzzle tree. This large cone came from a major fossil collection and has been cut in half and highly polished for optimal display. The exterior of the cone exhibits the individual cone scales in wonderful fashion. And the interior of the cone is beautifully preserved. The cone has been totally replaced by silica in a multitude of wonderful colors. The distinct ''core'' of the cone is intact, and the individual seeds are quite evident. The combination of large size, striking coloration, and the extremely fine detail of the cone makes this a very collectible fossil.
