This is a very pretty fossil plant from the famous Tonganoxie Sandstone of Kansas. This Sphenophyllum specimen was recently acquired from an old collection - the fossil was collected in the 1970s. . This site has been closed to collecting for a number of years. Sphenophyllum are the leaf whorls of an extinct horsetail. They are related to the modern-day scouring rushes. The many whorls of the rush have great detail preserved and are nicely showcased. This is a very detailed specimen of a fossil Sphenophyllum from the Pennsylvanian of Kansas.
