Name:
Ocotea coloradensis
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Douglas Pass, Colorado
Size: Leaf is 2.2" long including petiole
Here is a very rare fossil leaf. This is Ocotea coloradensis from the Eocene of Colorado. This is only the second example of this leaf that we have seen. This long leaf has an acute base and exhibits slightly undulating margins. The palmate venation of the leaf is beautifully displayed, and the petiole is still tightly attached. The naturally dark leaf contrasts wonderfully with the khaki-colored matrix. The leaf is well centered on the natural plate of shale. This is an excellent example of this extremely scarce leaf from the Green River Shale.
