Name:
Glossopteris browniana
Age: Permian
Formation: Glossopteris Beds
Location: New South Wales, Australia
Size: Plate is 6.7 inches across
Here is a distinct fossil plant. This is wonderful plate of Glossopteris browniana from the Permian of Australia. Glossopteris was a tree of substantial size and had a trunk reaching up to 16'' in diameter. This giant seed fern had very thick leaves - each leaf had a sturdy midrib with a network of veins. Fossils from this tree are an important indicator of the theory of continental drift. There are several leaves present on this plate, and they exhibit fine detail - the ''finger-print'' venation is beautifully displayed. The natural, orangish-red leaves contrast strikingly with the pinkish-white matrix. The plants are well positioned on the semi-triangular plate. This is a very displayable specimen of Glossopteris vegetation from the Permian of Australia.
