Name:
Populus wilmattae (Poplar Leaf)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Douglas Pass, Colorado
Size: Leaf is over 4 inches long
This is an extremely nice fossil plant. It is a fine leaf of Populus wilmattae, a Poplar, from the Green River Formation of Utah. This heart-shaped leaf has a tight, branching base - the venation of the leaf is quite distinct and easily seen with the naked eye. The LONG petiole is still tightly attached to the base of the leaf. But the most unusual feature of this leaf is that the left side of the leaf has been eaten by bugs! It is easily seen where the bugs chewed on the body of the leaf. This is a very collectible specimen of a bug-eaten Poplar leaf from the Eocene.
