Lepidodendron Bark
Age: Pennsylvanian

Size: Plate is 10.2 inches across
This is a beautiful specimen of Lepidodendron bark from the Pennsylvanian of Iowa. Lepidodendron trees were very important in the formation of coal in the mid-continent area. The diamond-shaped pattern of the bark is very distinct. Each ''diamond'' represents the point of attachment of a fallen leaf. This specimen is one of the more detailed examples of Lepidodendron bark that we have seen. And the size of the piece makes for a stunning display. This is a great example of this unusual bark from a Coal Age tree.
