Name:
Macginitiea wyomingensis (Sycamore Leaf)
Age: Eocene
Formation: Green River Formation
Location: Bonanza, Utah
Size: Leaf is 3.6 inches long
This is a very rare fossil. It is a beautiful Macginitiea wyomingensis (Sycamore) leaf from the Green River Formation of Utah. This leaf is wonderfully complete - all five lobes of the leaf are present and beautifully displayed. The entire, distinctly serrated margins of the leaf are easily seen, and the venation is clearly defined. An extremely long, complete petiole is still tightly attached to the base of the leaf. But the real rarity of this piece is the fossil worm that is also preserved on the plate. The worm is partially covered by the leaf - it may have been seeking shelter under the leaf! This is an extremely rare occurrence in the fossil record. It is a very collectible fossil with both the plant and animal kingdoms represented.
