Unusual Six-Lobed Sycamore Leaf from Utah
Stock Number  ECA522

Name:   Macginitiea wyomingensis (Sycamore Leaf)
Age:  Eocene
Formation:  Green River Formation
Location:  Bonanza, Utah
Size:  Leaf is 3.1 inches long

This is an unusual fossil leaf. It is a fine Macginitiea wyomingensis (Sycamore) leaf from the Green River Formation of Utah. This leaf is rare in that it has six lobes - most Sycamore leaves have five. The margins of the leaf are easily seen, and the venation is clearly defined. An extremely long, complete petiole is still tightly attached to the base of the leaf. The natural, dark-brown color of the leaf contrasts strikingly with the lighter-colored matrix. The fossil is nicely showcased on the almost square plate of shale. This is a stunning specimen of a six-lobed Sycamore leaf from the Eocene.
