Name:
Alder Leaf and Metasequoia Frond
Age: Eocene
Formation: Tranquille Shale
Location: Cache Creek, British Columbia, Canada
Size: Plate is 9.3 inches long
Here is an extremely attractive specimen of Metasequoia occidentalis and Alnus sp. from the Eocene of Canada. The Metasequoia (Dawn Redwood) frond exhibits superb detail. The central shoot and opposite attachment of the individual leaflets are displayed in wonderful fashion. The Alnus (Alder) leaf is complete right down to the petiole. This leaf also has excellent detail preserved. Both plant fossils are well positioned on the natural plate of shale. The dark-colored fossils have excellent contrast with the lighter-colored matrix. This is a top quality example of a Metasequoia and an Alder from the Tranquille Shale of Canada.
