Here is a nice specimen of Lepidostrobus, a cone from the Lepidodendron tree. This specimen is a rare occurrence from the Pennsylvanian of Iowa. The large cone consists of a central stalk crowded with spirally arranged bracts. This specimen has excellent detail - the individual bracts are easily seen. The fossil has nice color and excellent contrast. The cone is well showcased on the matrix plate that also contains other plant fossils. This is a fine specimen of this unusual cone from the Coal Age.
